The Victron EasySolar-II GX integrates the following elements:

  • A powerful MultiPlus II inverter/charger

  • A SmartSolar MPPT solar charge controller

  • A GX device with a 2 x 16 character display

These items are pre-wired and pre-configured together into a single unit. This greatly simplifies most installations, saving time and money.

Features common to all applications

GX LCD display

A 2x16 character backlit display shows the system parameters.

BMS CAN connectors

The BMS CAN connector allows the use of compatible 500 kbps CAN bus BMS batteries. VE.Can products such as Victron MPPT Solar Chargers or a Lynx Shunt VE.Can are NOT supported.

Ethernet and WiFi

Ethernet and WiFi connections allow for local and remote system monitoring as well as connection to Victron's free VRM portal for long-term system performance data.

Automatic seamless switching

Houses and also larger buildings with solar modules or small combined heat and power plants often generate enough energy to supply additional important devices (heating circulation pumps, refrigerator, freezer, Internet PC, etc.) during a power failure. Unfortunately, these grid-connected energy sources also fail in the event of a grid failure. This product, together with its batteries, solves the problem: The product replaces the mains in the event of a power failure. When the sustainable energy sources produce more electricity than needed, the product uses the surplus to charge the batteries; in the event of a failure, the product provides additional battery power.

Two AC outlets

Besides the usual uninterruptible output (AC-Out-1), there is an additional output (AC-Out-2), which, however, disconnects the load in case of battery power only. Example: an electric boiler that may only be operated with an existing AC input. There are several applications for AC-Out-2.

Three phase operation

The device can be connected to others and configured for three-phase output. Up to 6 groups of three can be connected in parallel to provide 45 kW/54 kVA inverter power and more than 600 A charging capacity.

PowerControl - Optimization of the power supply with limited alternating current

The product can charge a very large current. This puts a heavy load on the AC input. For this reason, a maximum current can be set. The product then takes other electricity consumers into account and only uses “excess” electricity for charging.

PowerAssist - Extended use of generator or shore power

This feature adds another dimension to the PowerControl principle, allowing the product to supplement the capacity of the alternative power source. If the peak power is often only required for a limited period of time, the product ensures that insufficient AC input power immediately compensated by the performance of the battery. When the load drops, the excess power is used to charge the battery.

Programmable

All settings can also be made on the PC using the free configuration software.

Programmable relay

The device has a programmable relay. The relay can be used for various other functions such as B. be reprogrammed as a generator start relay.

External current transformer (option)

An optional external current converter to implement PowerControl and PowerAssist with external current measurement

Programmable analog/digital input/output ports (see appendix on AUX In 1 and AUX In 2)

The device has 2 analog/digital input/output ports.

These ports can be used for different purposes. One application is in transmission with the BMS of a lithium-ion battery.

Offers specific on-grid and off-grid systems in combination with PV.

External current transformer (optional)

In a grid-parallel topology, the internal current transformer cannot measure the current coming from or injected into the grid connection. In such a case, an external current transformer should be used. See Appendix A. For more information on this type of installation please contact your Victron dealer .

Frequency shift

When solar inverters are connected to the AC output of the product, excess solar energy is used to charge the batteries. After the constant voltage has been reached, the charging current is reduced and excess energy is fed back into the grid. When the grid is unavailable, the product slightly increases the AC frequency to reduce the power of the solar inverter.

Built-in battery monitor

The ideal solution when the product is part of a hybrid system (AC input, inverter/chargers, storage battery and alternative energy). The built-in battery monitor can be set to toggle the relay on and off:

  • Turns on at a predetermined percentage of discharge level

  • Turn on (with a specified delay) at a specified battery voltage

  • Turn on (with a specified delay) at a specified duty cycle

  • Switch off at a specified battery voltage

  • Turns off (with a predetermined delay) after the constant current phase has completed

  • Turn off (with a specified delay) at a specified duty cycle

Autonomous operation in the event of a power failure

Houses and also larger buildings with solar modules or small combined heat and power plants often generate enough energy to supply additional important devices (heating circulation pumps, refrigerator, freezer, Internet PC, etc.) during a power failure. Unfortunately, these grid-connected energy sources also fail in the event of a grid failure. This product, together with its batteries, solves the problem: The product replaces the mains in the event of a power failure. When the sustainable energy sources produce more electricity than needed, the product uses the surplus to charge the batteries; in the event of a failure, the product provides additional battery power.

Charger

Lead-acid batteries

Adaptive 4-stage charging algorithm: "Bulk" (constant current phase) - "Absorption" (constant voltage phase) - "Float" (trickle charge voltage phase) - "Storage" (storage mode)

The microprocessor-controlled battery charging system can be adapted to the different battery types. The charging process is adapted to the battery usage via an adaptive control.

The right amount of charge: variable constant voltage phase

If the discharge is only small, the constant voltage time is reduced in order to prevent possible overcharging and the associated increased gas development. On the other hand, after a deep discharge, the constant voltage phase is automatically extended so that full charge is achieved again.

Preventing damage from excessive gassing: The BatterySafe mode

In order to shorten the charging time, the aim is to use as high a charging current as possible in conjunction with a high constant voltage. However, in order to avoid excessive gas development towards the end of the constant current phase, the speed of the voltage increase is limited as soon as the gassing voltage is reached.

Less maintenance and aging when the battery is at rest: the storage mode

The storage mode is activated whenever the battery has not been discharged within 24 hours. In storage mode, the float voltage is then lowered to 2.2V per cell to minimize gassing and corrosion on the positive plates. Once a week the voltage is raised back to the constant voltage level to balance the battery. This achieves a type of equalization charge that prevents electrolyte stratification and sulfation, the two main causes of premature battery failure.

Battery voltage sensor: the correct charging voltage

A voltage loss due to cable resistance can be compensated by using the voltage sensing device. The voltage is measured directly on the DC bus or on the battery connections

battery voltage and temperature compensation

The temperature sensor (supplied with the product) is used to reduce the charging voltage when the battery temperature rises. This is particularly important for maintenance-free batteries, since this sensor prevents drying out due to overcharging.

ESS - Energy storage systems: Return of energy to the power grid

If the product is used in a configuration where it feeds energy back into the grid, it is necessary to enable grid code compliance by selecting the appropriate grid code country setting using the VEConfigure tool.

After the corresponding connection conditions have been defined, these or individual parameters can only be deactivated or changed using a password. Contact your Victron dealer if you require this password.

There are multiple reactive power control modes depending on the grid code;

  • Fixed cos φ

  • Cos φ as a function of P

  • Fixed Q

  • Q as a function of the input voltage

Reactive efficiency

If the local grid code is not supported by the product, an external certified interface device should be used to connect the product to the power grid.

The product can also be used as a two-ended off-grid inverter integrated with a custom system (PLC or other) that handles the control loop and grid measurement.
